LOS ANGELES — The Oxy women's water polo team picked up their first win of the season with a 12-8 victory against Penn State-Behrend in a non-conference match at Taylor Pool on Monday.
The Tigers got off to a hot start, jumping out to a four-goal lead in the first quarter and giving them the offensive boost to power them throughout the game. Oxy's press defense also shined, holding the Lions to 2-9 on power plays and allowing only 21 shots.
"We started well and really believed in our press defense," Oxy head coach Jack Stabenfeldt said.
Sophomore attacker, Monica Chernoff had a monster game for the Tigers, recording nine points on four goals and five assists. Hi'ipoi Lee contributed three goals and one assist, and Lori Berberian added two goals and one assist.
Claudia Oppermann also played big for the Tigers - notching two goals and an assist, while consistently creating open space for Oxy attackers.
The game was originally scheduled to be part of the Claremont Convergence tournament last weekend, but was moved to Oxy's campus on Monday after Penn State-Behrend had travel issues due to weather.
Season Impact: The Tigers improve to 1-4 on the season and look to carry Monday's momentum into Wednesday nights SCIAC showdown against the Caltech Beavers in Pasadena.Follow Oxy Athletics on Twitter Sign Up for Newsletters Watch on Youtube Follow us on Instagram
