LA MIRADA, Calif. — The Occidental College women's cross country team finished third behind Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (7-0) and Whittier College (6-1) at the SCIAC Multi-Dual at La Mirada Park on Saturday. Oxy's top five finishers combined for 89 points, just seven behind the Poets 82.
"I think you can only control, what you can control," Occidental coach Rob Bartlett said. "And we were up against two good teams in Claremont and Whittier that deserved to beat us. But we really did a great job and those women worked incredibly hard."
Sierra Walker had the best time for the Tigers (5-2) completing the 6K course in 23 minutes and 9 seconds, good enough for 15th overall. Megan Lang finshed ins 18th (23:22.22), Eliza Dornbush in 21st (23:41.46), Anna Dalton in 22nd (23:45.38) and Danielle Lyons in fifth (23:51.28).
Lyons, Jenna Wong (23:52.77) and Lydia Harmons (24:39.81) all recorded personal bests for Oxy.
They knew we needed the back end of our team to have good days and they really came through for the team," Bartlett said. "They were really the story for us on the women's side."
Pomona-Pitzer's Anne Lyons won the race with a time of 21:24.32.
The women finish SCIAC play on Oct. 29 at the SCIAC Championships at Prado Park.
"The win is probably a little bit out of our reach, CMS on the women's side has an incredible. They're ranked No. 4 in the nation at the moment," Bartlett said. "But certainly that second place with Whittier is going to be an exciting competition. They beat us by a little bit today, but I think it's anyone's race in two weeks."
