Oxy Women's XC Places 6th in West

CLAREMONT — The Occidental women's cross country team finished sixth out of a field of 20 teams and 133 runners at the NCAA Division III West Region Championship race at the Pomona-Pitzer Course on Saturday.

Only Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (2nd) and Pomona-Pitzer (5th) were better from the SCIAC.

The Tigers exceeded expectations. Prior to the race, Oxy was not ranked in the top 10 in the West.

Oxy's Roxanne Valle, Eva Townsend and Aria Blumm were all named All-Region for finishing in the top 35.

Valle, a first year from Azusa, was Oxy's first to cross the line, finishing the 6k in 22nd place overall at 22 minutes, 56.93 seconds.

Townsend was 29th at 23:12.71 and Blumm was 35th with a time of 23:21.96.

Maya Weigel of Pomona-Pitzer was the overall winner of the race with time of 21:24.98.

Willamette won the team championship with CMS placing second. Both will receive automatic bids to the NCAA Division III Championship in Winneconne, Wis. on Nov. 22.

Eva Townsend, 23:12.71 - 29th overall

Aria Blumm, 23:21.96 - 35th overall

Mel Devoney, 24:08.64 - 57th overall

Sarah Ruiz, 24:33.72 - 69th overall.
