Oxy Women's XC Beats Pomona in Dual

CLAREMONT -- The Occidental women's cross country started the season on the right foot, beating Pomona-Pitzer in a dual meet on Thursday, 25-35.

Eva Townsend was the first Oxy woman across the line, followed by Mel Devoney. First years Sabrina ThurberFiona Pedrick and Catherine Teasdale rounded out Oxy's top 5.

"It's a really positive start to the season," Oxy head coach Rob Bartlett said. "Pomona-Pitzer is a team that beat us at the regional and conference level last year so it's a really good sign that we've taken a big step forward to come out on top in our first race."

The Oxy men had too tough of a task against the Sagehen men, who are ranked No. 5 in the country, falling 15-50.

"They're a phenomenal team that will be in the hunt for a national title," Bartlett said. "Given the times that we ran and the way that we did it, it wasn't too bad."

Oxy's top two finishers were as expected with Austin Sankaran leading the way and Keenan Learyjust behind him. Brody Barkan, a middle distance runner for the Oxy track team, made the top seven in his cross country debut.
