NEW ORLEANS — The Occidental cross country teams are again ranked among the top squads in the West Region.

The Oxy men's team is a USTFCCCA preseason No. 2 and the Oxy women are No. 3. Both teams also made the USTFCCA National Poll with the men at No. 18 and the women at No. 27.

"We're honored to be ranked so high in the Regional USTFCCCA pre-season rankings," Oxy head coach Rob Bartlett said. "Obviously there is a lot of running to do between now and November, but we're excited about our group this year and looking forward to having the opportunity to prove ourselves in the coming weeks."

For the Oxy women, this recognition is a sign of a big step forward. The Tigers finished sixth in the West in each of the past two seasons, but increasingly talented recruiting classes have pushed Oxy toward the top.

For the Oxy men, the ranking indicates they are poised to make a run at their first West Region title since 2011.

Both teams will begin competition on Friday evening with a three team competition against Pomona-Pitzer and La Verne. The competition was originally scheduled for 5 p.m., but has been moved back to 6 p.m. due to extreme heat in Southern California.
