Since 2013, Joe Gonzalez has demonstrated a commitment to the overall health and safety of Oxy’s varsity student athletes. In his role as the Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine, Joe leads a skilled and professional staff of three certified athletic trainers to provide and coordinate the medical services for nearly 500 varsity student athletes.
While Joe provides overall supervision for all of Oxy’s varsity teams, he primarily works with the women’s basketball, baseball, and men’s and women’s golf teams. Joe is also involved with a number of committees on campus, including the Student Success Team and the Emergency Preparedness committee. Regionally, Joe volunteers as a District 8 peer support provider for the National Athletic Trainers’ Association ATs Care program.
Prior to coming to Oxy, Joe spent 11 years as an assistant athletic trainer at Loyola Marymount University, where he worked primarily with a number of teams including men’s soccer, women’s basketball, baseball, and men’s and women’s water polo. Joe was also an Approved Clinical Instructor for LMU’s accredited athletic training academic program. Specifically, he managed the athletic training students as they made their rotations through the LMU athletic training room.
In 2002, Joe volunteered at the Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, providing athletic training services for the long track speed skating events.
From 1998 to 2000, Joe worked in the physical therapy department at The Orthopedic Specialty Hospital in Murray, UT. In addition to his physical therapy responsibilities, he laso provided athletic training services to Kearns High School.
Joe holds a bachelor’s degree in Biology and a master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling, both from LMU. He is a Certified Athletic Trainer through the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He is also certified in the Graston Technique and Functional Movement Systems.
Joe resides in Glendale with his wife Heather and their daughter Elle.
