Michael Wells is in his ninth year at Occidental College now serving as the Sports Information Director and Associate Head Men's Basketball Coach.
His responsibilities include overseeing Sports Information, Games Management, the annual Roy Dennis Oxy's Awards Banquet and the Occidental College Athletics Hall of Fame, along with his work with the Men's Basketball team.
As the Associate Head Coach of the Tigers, Wells helped lead the team to back-to-back SCIAC Postseason Tournaments in 2017-18 and 2018-19, and the SCIAC Tournament Championship game in 2018-19. Oxy went 19-6 overall and 12-4 in SCIAC during 2017-18 and 22-5 and 12-4 in 2018-19.
Wells is in charge of Oxy's defense that was the only NCAA Division III program to be ranked in the top 10 in the country in points allowed, opponent field goal percentage and 3-point field goal defense in 2017-18, and ranked in the top 25 in field goal percentage defense and points per game defense in 2018-19.
Wells also serves as Oxy's head junior varsity coach.
Wells, took over in 2011 as Oxy's Sports Information Director. He was quickly promoted to Assistant Athletic Director in 2012 and to Associate Athletic Director in 2015, but relinquished both responsibilities in 2019 to focus more on basketball.
Wells, whose mother Jodie Burton and father David Wells were longtime basketball coaches for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, graduated from Dominican University of California with a Bachelor of Arts in communications in May 2011. Wells was a team captain with the men's basketball team at Dominican and helped lead the Penguins to a CalPac Championship in 2008.
After graduating, Wells worked as a sports reporter for the Marin Independent Journal in Northern California, where he covered college, prep and youth sports and designed pages.
He received his Masters in Organizational Leadership from Woodbury University in 2014.
During his time at Oxy, Wells has incorporated multimedia and social media into Oxy's athletic coverage, including highlight packages of sporting events and one-on-one interviews with athletes and coaches. He is a regular contributor to the Occidental College Alumni Magazine, writing feature stories on current and former Oxy athletes and coaches.
Wells hosts Oxy's annual Roy Dennis Oxy's Awards Banquet and can frequently be found on the microphone doing public address announcing at various Oxy sporting events.
In 2012, he served as an outside contractor for multimedia at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field National Championships and in 2017 he was the Field Events Announcer for UCLA Track and Field. He has also announced several of Oxy's home track meets, including the SCIAC Championships, and meets for Long Beach St.
Within the SCIAC, he has played a leadership role, serving as the Chair of the SCIAC Sports Information Directors Committee and as a member of the SCIAC Awards Committee and men's and women's water polo liason.
