LOS ANGELES — The No. 17 Occidental baseball team just refuses to lose.
After letting a three-run lead slip in the eighth and falling behind by a run in the ninth, the Tigers rallied for a pair of runs to beat Pomona-Pitzer 7-6 at Anderson Field on Friday for their 16th win in their last 17 games.
Season Impact: The Tigers improve to 18-5 overall and are in first place in the SCIAC at 13-3 in.
Pomona-Pitzer falls to 12-12 and 5-8.
Brady Fuller started the rally with a single, Charlie Caccamo put the Tigers in scoring position with a double, Eamon McNeil singled in the game-tying run and then Graham Pimm lined a single through the right side of the infield, bringing home Devon DeRaad for the game-winning run.
The Tigers rushed the field from the dugout in walk-off fashion for the fourth time this season. Oxy has won six games by just one run and pulled off nine comebacks when trailing after the fifth inning.
"Our guys have a great belief in the process, our mission and their teammates," Oxy coach Luke Wetmore said.
With two outs in the top of the eighth, Oxy looked in control of the game with a 5-2 lead. But Tanner Nishi hit a three-run homer to tie it and then Bryce Rogan followed it up with a solo shot in the ninth, putting the Sagehens in front 6-5.
Nothing changed for the Tigers, who remained confident.
"Our group doesn't flinch in the face of adversity," Wetmore said. "It's a fun group to be around with a great perspective on the game."
Fuller, Oxy's leadoff hitter, went 3 for 4 with a run scored, upping his SCIAC average to .414 - the fifth best in the conference right now.
McNeil went 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs, Bryan Smith was 3 for 4 and Caccamo went 2 for 3 with two runs scored for Oxy.
Riley James earned the win. Thomas Kelleher was charged with the loss.
Oxy starter Nolan Watson worked his way out of jams for five innings pitched with just one unearned run crossing the plate.
Chasing History: Oxy is chasing the program's first SCIAC Championship since 1982 and looking to get back to the SCIAC Postseason Tournament.
