LOS ANGELES — Brady Fuller got the walk-off hit in the ninth as the Occidental baseball team moved one step closer to its first SCIAC Championship since 1982 with a 2-1 win over Whittier at Anderson Field on Sunday.
The Tigers can clinch at least a share of the SCIAC Championship and secure home field advantage for the SCIAC Postseason Tournament with a win over Caltech on Sunday afternoon.
Fuller, Oxy's senior leadoff hitter and first baseman, lined a shot to left field with the bases loaded in the ninth, bringing in Reid Gibbs for the winning run.
Fuller has been one of Oxy's most valuable players at the top of the lineup. In conference games, he is hitting .390 with a .500 on base percentage.
Devon DeRaad continued his case for SCIAC Player of the Year, hitting a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning, tying the game and putting him one shy of his Occidental single season record of 13.
DeRaad leads the SCIAC in home runs, RBIs, batting average, on base percentage and slugging percentage.
After his homer the Poets stayed mostly away from him, intentionally walking him twice.
Oxy starter Nolan Watson pitched an absolute gem, throwing a complete game with no earned runs and six strikeouts. He walked just one batter and gave up five hits.
Season Impact: Oxy moves to 29-8 overall and 21-6 in SCIAC play.
Next Game: The Tigers and Beavers play at 3 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.Follow Oxy Athletics on Twitter Sign Up for Newsletters Watch on Youtube Follow us on Instagram
