Oxy Scores 106 in Exhibition Win

LOS ANGELES — The Occidental Mens Basketball team opened the 2018-19 season Sunday afternoon, cruising to a 106-55 win in an exhibition matchup against Bethesda University. 

The Tigers showed no signs of rust, scoring 60 points in the first half — shooting an efficient 51 percent from the field. Jonny Crosthwaite had a huge half with 21 points, going 3-4 from beyond the arch, finishing with 23 points and eight assists. 

Jacob Adler caught fire in the second half, finishing with 23 points on 5 for 10 shooting. Zach Baines ended with 21 points and 3 blocks, and Austin DeWitz added an easy 18 points, 13 rebounds, and seven assists. Caleb Yellin-Flaherty looked good on defense, posting 12 boards, two steals, and two blocks. 

Ryan Kaneshiro played great on-ball defense and got people great open looks with seven assists and just one turnover. 

Oxy as a group looked its best when it made the extra pass, assisting on 33 of its baskets. 

All 17 suited players got in the game for Oxy, including 6-foot-6 first year forward Connor Dargan, who made four free throws in 11 minutes. 

2018-2019 Season Preview

Oxy is coming off its best season in 10 years, finishing 19-7 overall and 12-4 in conference in 2017-2018. The Tigers, highlighted by First-Team All-SCIAC selections Austin DeWitz and Zach Baines, return all five starters and will look to build on last years second-place SCIAC finish.

Baines, a senior from Stamford, Conn., finished the 2017-2018 season fourth in the conference in scoring, second in blocks, and third in minutes. He averaged 18.8 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. 

DeWitz, a senior from Oregon City, OR, enters his final season with an already impressive resume. The 2x SCIAC Champ and 2018 All-American High Jumper led the conference in minutes and rebounds per game. He averaged 16.7 points and 9.3 boards in his breakout junior season. 

The Tigers also return juniors Ryan Kaneshiro, Caleb Yellin-Flaherty, and Jonny Crosthwaite, and sophomore Jacob Adler - all of whom contributed major minutes in last year's stellar season.

Next Game: Oxy plays one more exhibition game against Westmont on Saturday Nov. 10 before beginning the regular season on Nov. 16 at Caltech.
