DeWitz Earns Second Defensive AOW Award

DeWitz Earns Second Defensive AOW Award

LOS ANGELESAustin DeWitz was named the SCIAC's Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season on Monday.

DeWitz, a 6-foot-7 senior from Oregon City, Ore., led Oxy to a pair of wins over Redlands and Whittier.

In an 86-68 win at Whittier, he grabbed as many rebounds as the entire Whittier team with a remarkable 21 boards and 16 at the defensive end of the court. DeWitz challenged shots by the basket and then helped Oxy outrebound Whittier 51-21. He had 15 points, four assists and just one turnover on 6 for 14 shooting against the Poets.

He also had a quiet near triple-double with 16 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists in a 71-64 win at home against Redlands. His biggest contribution in the game though was making Redlands high post David Menary work to catch the ball, denying the elbow pass that's so key to Redlands offense.

It is the second time this season that DeWitz has garnered the weekly honor. He won the award for the first time this season on Nov. 19.

During his junior season, DeWitz was named First Team All-SCIAC and All-West Region. He is a standout for the Oxy track team as an All-American and SCIAC Champion high jumper.

The honor is the fifth award for Oxy's defense this season. Ryan Kaneshiro has won it three times and Oxy's defense currently ranks 10th in the country in field goal percentage defense, allowing just 38.8 percent shooting.

Oxy's offense has been sharp too. The Tigers are seventh in the country in field goal percentage, shooting 51.3 percent.

Zach Baines has been leading the offensive front, scoring 21.7 points per game. He has been named the SCIAC Offensive Player of the Week twice and set the Oxy single game scoring record with 50 points against Pacific (Ore.).

The Tigers have clinched a spot on the four-team SCIAC Postseason Tournament for the second year in a row. Oxy will be no lower than the No. 3 seed and can clinch the No. 2 seed and a home game in the playoffs with wins over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer in their final two regular season games.

Oxy returns to the court at CMS on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
