Kawada Leads Oxy Past Willamette

LOS ANGELESTod Kawada scored a pair of goals, Oxy's defense was rarely threatened and the Occidental men's soccer team cruised past Willamette 3-0 in front of 753 fans in its season opener at Jack Kemp Stadium on Sunday.

Kawada provided the insurance goal in the 51st minute and then one more for fun in the 89th min. The second goal was assisted brilliantly by first year Matthew Teplitz who was outstanding attacking up the sideline all game long.

Ariel Rosso earned a penalty kick that Elijah Remy calmly slotted into the corner of the net to give Oxy its first goal in the 9th minute.

Students from all over campus turned up to eat free tacos and see what has become an exciting brand of soccer and very competitive team, over the past couple of seasons under head coach Rod Lafaurie.

"I'm proud that we earned the shutout," Lafaurie said. "We still have a lot of levels and layers where we can improve, but I'm proud of our guys tonight."

The Tigers are back in action on Wednesday with a huge SCIAC game against national No. 7 Redlands.
