Remy's Penalty Beats Caltech

Remy's Penalty Beats Caltech

LOS ANGELESElijah Remy scored a penalty kick in the 83rd minute, leading the Occidental men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Caltech after a sluggish start.

Oxy improves to 2-2 on the season and 1-1 in SCIAC play. The Tigers return to the field on Sept. 16 against Pomona-Pitzer at 1 p.m.

Caltech falls to 1-4 and 0-1.

Oxy ramped up its urgency as the second half was winding down. On one of several consecutive corners and crosses into the box, Ryan Wilson was taken down by his shirt  by Gianfranco De Castro, earning a penalty.

Remy stepped up to the spot and calmy scored the penalty as he always does for the Tigers, giving Oxy what became an anxious victory.

Remy has scored two penalties already this season and is up to eight career goals.

Tod Kawada, who scored two goals against Willamette in Oxy's home opener, kept pressing up the right sideline and in the middle of the field, firing off five shots with three on the frame, but couldn't put Oxy into the lead.

Oxy outshot the Beavers as a group 24-3, including 16 in the first half.

The Beavers were in search of their first SCIAC win since 2011 when they beat Cal Lutheran 2-1.

Caltech goalkeeper Joe Como played well in the net, making 13 saves to prevent Oxy from breaking the game open. Kevin Yu created a pair of shots on goal for Caltech.
