Oxy Clinches Playoff Spot With Road Win

LOS ANGELESJack Meeker scored the game's only goal in the 25th minute as the Occidental soccer team won at Chapman 1-0 on Saturday.

Meeker got fouled and then took his own free kick from the top of the box, hitting a shot that took a slight deflection and went in far post.

The victory secures Oxy's spot in the four-team SCIAC Playoffs that determine the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

The Tigers advanced all the way to the championship game last season before losing to Chapman at home.

Oxy, which improves its overall record to 9-5-4 on the season, continues its recent hot streak. The Tigers have won five of their last seven matches with a pair of ties. Oxy hasn't lost since Oct. 2 at Pomona-Pitzer.

The Tigers finish the regular season at Whittier on Nov. 2.
