Chang, Najarian and Vandy swim first race at NCAA Championships

SHENANDOAH, Texas — Occidental College's three swimmers competing at the NCAA Division III National Championships got their feet wet with their bonus swims on Wednesday.

Caroline Chang (Lisle, Ill.), Steven van Deventer (Naperville, Ill.) and Alexander Najarian (Glendale) all swam their non-signature events on Day 1 of the four-day competition.

Chang and van Deventer were both within 1 second of their SCIAC times in the 200-yard individual medley, and both swam solid splits in the breaststroke portion, the event that both are expected to make noise in later in the week. Chang swam the leg in 35.7 and van Deventer went 31.1.

Najarian swam the 50 freestyle in 21.67.

But the main focus was for all three was to get in the pool and get the feeling for the national stage.

"It's nice that these races came first for each of them," Occidental College swimming and diving coach Shea Manning said. "They all got a chance to get the jitters out and we got very positive information today."

Najarian swims the butterfly on Thursday around 8:30 a.m.

Chang and van Deventer will compete in the 100 and 200 breast on Friday and Saturday.
