Tigers Defeat Lewis & Clark, Hang with No. 20 Westminster

LOS ANGELES — The Occidental 200-yard medley relay team of Matt Weiser, Steven van Deventer, Austin Lashley and Chase Mitchell opened the meet with a season-best time of 1:38.34 and the Tigers rode that momentum to a win over Lewis & Clark, while hanging with No. 20 Westminster at Taylor Pool on Tuesday.

Kevin Brooks, Westminster's national qualifying backstroker, got Westminster out in front. But van Deventer, a two-time national champion breaststroker, quickly erased that deficit. Lashley got Oxy to even and Mitchell pulled away for a narrow victory.

Team Results: Occidental d. Lewis & Clark; No. 20 Westminster d. Occidental, 151.5-109.5.

The Tigers had some great individual efforts as well.

van Deventer won both the 50 breast (26.98) and the 100 breast (59.17).

Oxy went 1-2 in the 100 IM, with Weiser finishing first (55.71) and van Deventer in second (55.94), and in the 50 butterfly, with Mitchell winning (24.24) and Lashley coming in second (24.66).

The Oxy men won all but one event against Lewis & Clark.

From the Coach: "It was nice to see some solid racing almost two weeks into our heavy training camp period," Oxy head coach Shea Manning said. "We're excited about seeing how we continue to progress as we approach the Redlands meet this Saturday."

Next Meet: The Tigers are back in action against the Bulldogs on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Taylor Pool.
