Oxy Men's Swim Earns First Win Over ULV Since 2009

LOS ANGELESAustin Lashley sure didn't swim a freshman on Saturday.

The Oxy rookie won both butterfly events and swam a leg of both of the Tigers' winning relays, leading the Occidental men's swimming and diving team to its first dual victory over La Verne in six years, 156-117 at Taylor Pool.

His 200 fly (2:05.61) was a top-ten Oxy time and he was also first to the wall in the 100 fly (54.20).

Theo Bass, another freshman, won the 1,000 freestyle (11:02.84) with teammates David Mariscal and Jeffrey Yoshida finishing behind him in second and third place to complete a sweep in the event. Bass also won the 500 free (5:14.59).

After missing the Tigers' last meet with an injury, Oxy's two-time 200 breaststroke national champ Steven van Deventer won both the 100 breast (58.77) and the 200 breast (2:11.00) with season-best times.

Lashley teamed up with Matt Weiser, Chase Mitchell and van Deventer to win the 200 medley relay (1:37.94) and with Mitchell, William Westwater and Sean Sullivan to win the 200 freestyle relay.

From the Coach: "It's a nice streak to end," Oxy head coach Shea Manning said. "We've been really close with them the past several years, so it's reassuring to see our team growth and hard work pay-off with a dual meet win over a team that has held our number for so long."

Season Impact: The Tigers are 5-3 overall in scored meets and 3-2 vs. SCIAC opponents.

SCIAC Scoring Note: Only the SCIAC Championship meet is counted in the SCIAC standings during the 2014-15 season. Dual meets are not factored into determining a team's finish.

Next Meet: The Tigers travel to Cal Lutheran to face the Kingsmen and Pomona-Pitzer on Jan. 31.
