Weiser, Vandy Lead Oxy Past Whittier

LOS ANGELESSteven van Deventer and Matt Weiser each won of pair of events and swam a leg on a winning relay, leading the Occidental men's swimming and diving team to win over Whittier at Taylor Pool on Saturday in their final tune-up before the SCIAC Championships begin on Feb. 19.

The Tigers won the meet 168-117.

van Deventer, a two-time NCAA National Champion in the 200 breaststroke, won the 100 (59.03) and 200-yard (2:12.64) breaststroke events. He also teamed up with William Westwater, Sean Sullivan and Alexander Najarian to win the 400 freestyle relay (3:17.76).

Weiser won the 500 free (5:00.54), the 200 individual medley (2:06.54) and joined van Deventer, Najarian and Chase Mitchell to win the 200 IM (1:37.90). The Oxy rookie was also second in the 1,650 free (17:23.73).

Mitchell won the 100 backstroke (55.91), Austin Lashley took the 200 butterfly (2:07.16) and David Avery won the 200 back (2:10.71), rounding out Oxy's first-place finishes.

Next Meet: The SCIAC Championship Meet will be held at the Brenda Villa Aquatic Center in Commerce from Feb. 19-22.
