Westwater, Relay Take Down Records at SCIAC Day 2

LA MIRADAWilliam Westwater led the Tigers to two school records today at the SCIAC Championships. The first - in his individual 50 freestyle - marks the first time an Oxy swimmer has gone under 21.00. Ed Bedford had held the record of 21.00 since 1992, and it now belongs to second-place finisher Westwater at 20.93.

The second record fell during the 200 freestyle relay when Westwater joined forces with Austin Lashley, Sean Sullivan, and Chase Mitchell to finish third with a time of 1:24.34, crushing the previous record of 1:25.10. Westwater anchored in an astounding 20.19.

Lashley also swam in the finals of the 500 freestyle, finishing seventh at 21.18, .04 faster than his morning swim. Mitchell made it to the consolation final of the 50 free, finishing 12th and moving up six spots.

Matt Weiser finished 14th in the 200 IM and improved on his morning swim. Cody Hamane's prelims time of 1:59.28 - a lifetime best - barely missed consolation finals.

Other notable swims of the day included Elliot Davis's lifetime best in the 500 free (5:01.52), Theo Bass's 500 (4:55.73), Hank Franscioni in the 200 IM (2:01.99), and Edward Dabsys in the 50 free (22.25).

The men are now in fifth place with 177 points, within striking distance of Cal Lutheran.

Thursday's Recap:

Notable swims: Edward Dabsys's lead off leg of the 800 free B relay (1:47.64), Austin Lashley has second fastest fly time of the day (22.08)
