Thurber Breaks Two Records, Oxy Men Beat CLU

LOS ANGELES — First year Madison Thurber broke a pair of school records in the backstroke in just her third collegiate meet for the women's team and the men's team crushed Cal Lutheran during a big day for the Oxy swimming and diving programs at Taylor Pool on Saturday.

"For anyone that thinks swimming isn't a team sport, wasn't at the meet today," Oxy head coach Steve Webb said, referring to a turnout of more than 200 people on Alumni Day. "We had an electric atmostphere that brought out some amazing times for the third week of November.

The Oxy men, which ranked No. 28 in the Collegeswimming.com Poll earlier in the year, beat the Kingsmen by a score of 152-90.

Eddie Dabsys and Austin Lashley both had individual wins and swam in each winning relay for the men.

Oxy's men swept the podium in 100 backstroke with Aidan Seid and Parag Kalay finishing behind Ben Sappey, and in the 200 backstroke, where Kalay was first, Sappey second and Seid third.

"Across the board we were very solid with a huge number of lifetime best times," Webb said. "It is a true reflection of how how hard they have been working over the past seven weeks."

Thurber was a big individual highlight for the women, swimming 58.94 in the 100 back for a win and 2:08.09 for second place in the 200 back, moving to the top of Oxy's all-time lists. She beat Eliza Callwood's 2009 record of 1:00.24 in the 100 and Caroline Chang's 2012 record of 2:10.57 in the 200.

Annika Moen was her usual standout self, winning three individual races and swimming a leg on a winning relay.

Joan Kronick's time of 24.81 that just missed the school record in the 50 free, and her 54.78 in the 100 free were both lifetime bests.

"I was very pleased with where they we're at," Webb said. "Any time you can set school records in a dual meet shows that you are on the right track."

Oxy's 200 Medley Relay Team's (Madison Thurber, Annika Moen, Joan Kronick and Alix Leslie) time of 1:50.31 is currently the 20th-best in NCAA Division III and second-best in the SCIAC.

The Oxy women eventually fell 138-104.
