COMMERCE — The Occidental men's and women's swimming and diving teams completed competition at the 2018 SCIAC Swimming and Diving Championship meet at the Brenda Villa Aquatic Center.
The competition began on Wednesday and concluded Saturday night.
The Oxy men took 5th and the women finished 6th.
Austin Lashley was the individual highlight of the entire meet for the tigers, finishing with two All-SCIAC performances, five new school records, a pair of NCAA "B" cuts and a legitimate chance at qualifying for nationals in the 100 fly. The senior captain got second in the 100 and 200 fly breaking his previous school records in each event. Lashley also set school records in the 50 free and had impressive splits in Oxy's school record setting 200 free and 400 free relays.
The Oxy men had a couple young stars break out at this meet as well with first-years Zeke Sebastian and Parag Kalay making it into the "A" finals in their events and narrowly missing the podium. Many returners showed massive improvements this season as well. Juniors Edward Dabsys, Ben Sappey, and Elliot Davis shattered lifetime bests to put them into high scoring positions in the finals sessions. Dabsys broke the oldest standing record on the men's side in the 100 free from 1992 with an impressive swim of 45.44, which is also an NCAA"B" cut.
On the women's side, Annika Moen, Laura Chun, and Madison Thurber led the tigers with multiple "A" finals swims for each of them. Moen made it back to the "A" final in the 200 I.M, 100 fly, and 200 breaststroke. She broke the 100 fly record with a time of 58.08. Chun also made it back to the "A" final in all three individual events finishing 7th in all three. The first-year, Thurber, broke a pair of backstroke records to establish herself as one of the best in the conference.
Both teams completely rewrote the record books this year with 11 total new records.
"It was awesome! We exceeded all the expectations I had for them, and I am very proud of them" said Oxy head coach Steve Webb. "I am even more excited for the future of our very young team."
