TEXAS — The Occidental men's tennis team went 2-1 during a three-match stretch in Texas during the first weekend of spring break.
The Tigers beat Schreiner and Southwestern, and lost to East Texas Baptist.
Occidental 9, Schreiner 0
Despite the score being one-sided, it was a tight match with the doubles highly contested.
At No. 3 doubles, Joseph Schwarcz and David Zhang relinquished a two-break lead to let Schreiner back into their doubles match tied at 6-6. They bounced back using pinpoint accurate return of serves to get the break late in the set before eventually securing the victory.
In the closest singles match, Cameron Coe pulled out an 11-9 super tiebreaker in the third set, sealing a comeback victory over Andrew Albright 3-6, 6-2, (11-9).
Southwestern (Texas) 7, Occidental 2
Against a nationally-ranked Southwestern (Texas) squad, the Tigers played well in doubles, taking two points, but didn't have the same success in the singles.
Coe and Lucas Chmielewski won at No. 1 doubles 8-7 (2). They jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the tiebreaker to grab the match right from the start.
In a match full on controversy, Schwartz and Zhang pulled out an 8-4 win to get Oxy its second point.
It appeared the Tigers hit a wall of fatigue in the Georgetown, Texas heat which cost them in singles. The biggest example of that was Schwarcz, Oxy's No. 5, and Christian Anderson, Oxy's No. 6, cramping at the end of very long, close matches.
Occidental 8, East Texas Baptist 1
Oxy finished out its trip with a decisive 8-1 win over East Texas Baptist. The Tigers won every match, but had a rare loss at No. 3 doubles, where Schwarcz and Zhang couldn't find the same magic they had against Southwestern and Schreiner.
Season Impact: The Tigers' record goes to 3-3 overall.
