CLAREMONT — The Oxy men's tennis team completed its best Fall ITA performance in recent history, highlighted by outstanding newcomer performances, doubles play and overall number of wins.
Joe Shwarcz made a run to the semifinal of the Flight B draw with big victories over No. 2 seeded Miha Valencic of Caltech, avenging a dual-match loss last Spring. He then took down Redlands newcomer Michael Cabacungan and then Jacob Lee of Chapman before falling to No. 3-seeded Ethan Carroll of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
After dropping his first match to Whittier No. 1 Tommy Koszowski 10-7 in a third-set super tiebreaker, O'Connor went on to four consecutive matches in the back draw of the Flight B.
Lipe lost in the finals of the main draw of Flight C, winning four matches before losing to Jake Berber of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
Oxy shined in doubles play led by the tournament's No. 7 overall seeded team of Chmielewski and O'Connor making it to the quarterfinals before losing to Caltech's top team in a nailbiter 8-7 (5).
The Tigers also had strong performances from teams of Williams/David Zhang and Derrick/Anderson, who both had quality victories before falling in the semifinals of the back draw.
The overall success of the tournament bodes well for Oxy's goal of getting into the Top 30 in nation this season.
Oxy is done for the Fall and will resume its season after the winter break.
