Pegan, Men's Track Improve to 5-0

CLAREMONTHugh Pegan had three first place finishes in sprints, Austin Dewitz and Noah Winnick scored a ton of points in field events and the Occidental men's track and field team improved to 5-0 with two more wins on Saturday.

Season Impact: The Tigers beat Pomona-Pitzer 93-70 and Cal Lutheran 114-47 at SCIAC Multi-Dual # 2, putting them in first place in the SCIAC standings with just multi-dual competition against Redlands, Whittier and Caltech and the SCIAC Championship Meet remaining.

From the coach: "The men's team put together another great day of team competition," Oxy head coach Rob Bartlett said. "As coaches, we're incredibly excited to see the improvements being made by our athletes. We're headed in the right direction and excited for the rest of the season."

Pegan, a sophomore from Ukiah who was the SCIAC Newcomer of the Year in 2015, took first in the 100m (10.83 seconds) and the 200m (21.67), and ran legs on Oxy's winning 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams.

Pegan's 21.67 in the 200 isn't far off his lifetime best of 21.62 with two months still remaining in the season.

Oxy chose to mix and match its relay teams. The 4x100 (Jeh Johnson, Pegan, Chris Rom-Toribio, and Kyle Dalton) went 42.22 and the 4x400 (Nicholas Conklin, Gabriel Barrett-Jackson, Jesse Wong and Johnson) ran 3:20.52.

Johnson won his second 400m of the SCIAC season comfortably (48.54).

Dewitz, a first year from Portland and also a starter on the men's basketall team, keeps improving rapidly with more practice as he settles into track season. He took third in the 110 hurdles, first in the triple jump (43-03.25) and tied with defending SCIAC champion and teammate Taylor Walton in the high jump (6-04).

Winnick had three podium finishes in the throws. He was second in the shot put (43-10.5), third in the discus (122-02) and second in the hammer (145-01).

Brody Barkan was Oxy's standout in the mid-distance and distance events with Pomona-Pitzer dominating most of the competition, finishing second in the 800m with a collegiate best (1:56.48).

Oxy totaled 45 seasonal or lifetime bests as a group.

Next Meet: The Tigers are back at Pomona-Pitzer on April 9 for the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational.
