Oxy 4x400m Relay the Fastest in Division III

WALNUT — The Occidental men's track and field 4x400m relay team is the fastest in the country.

Gabriel Barrett-Jackson, Jesse Wong, Hugh Pegan and Jeh Johnson ran the best time in NCAA Division III this season and the fourth fastest in Division III SCIAC history at the Mt. Sac Relays on Friday afternoon.

The Tigers crossed the line in 3 minutes, 13.15 seconds, meaning the team will qualify easily for the NCAA Division III National Championships in Waverly, Iowa in late May.

"We are very proud of their performance. Coach (Tyler) Yamaguchi thinks there's still room for improvement in the coming weeks," Oxy head coach Rob Bartlett said. "We're excited to see what they can do at the conference and national levels."

Barrett-Jackson's split was 48, Wong went 49.7, Pegan did 47.9 and Johnson finished it off with a 47.4.

Oxy's 4x400m team was a national qualifier in 2015 and narrowly missed All-American honors, finishing ninth.

The Oxy men's track and field team is in first place in the SCIAC at 5-0 dual-meet competition and has been ranked as high as No. 15 in the USTFCCCA's Top 25 poll.

"We're looking forward to more of our athletes qualifying for the national championships and we're ready for an exciting finish to the season," Bartlett said.
