Pegan, Oxy Relays Qualify For Finals at NCAAs

GENEVA, Ohio — Defending 200m national champion Hugh Pegan and the Occidental men's track and field team qualified for three finals during the opening day of the 2017 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Spire Institute on Thursday.

Pegan, a junior from Ukiah, qualified seventh for the final heat on Saturday, running 21.50 in the 200m. He also ran a leg on Oxy's 4x400m team (Gabriel Barrett-Jackson, Caldwell Biddle, Hugh Pegan and Jeh Johnson) that qualified fourth overall and was second in its heat at 3:12.79, and on Oxy's 4x100m team (Johnson, Pegan, Keane Collins and Kyle Dalton) that qualified seventh at 41.26.

"We're excited that both our men's relay teams and Hugh progressed to the finals on Saturday," Oxy head coach Rob Bartlett said. "What's exciting is that everyone can still do a little better than today."

On the women's side, sophomore thrower Sabrina Degnan finished 16th overall in the javelin with a best of 127-11 in her first national qualifying appearance. Degnan won the SCIAC Championship in the javelin and broke Kelly Young's school record with a toss of 147 on April 29.

"Sabrina's had a phenomenal season and although she was a little disappointed today, we're really proud of her success and improvement this spring," Bartlett said.

The top eight finishers in each event earn All-American honors.

Sophomore Austin DeWitz, who cleared 6-09 at the SCIAC Championships, makes his first national championship appearance on Friday, along with Barrett-Jackson, who looks to advance to the finals in the 400m for a third consecutive year.
