Oxy Competes at NCAA Division I UCR Invite

RIVERSIDE — The Occidental men's and women's cross country teams ran in a competitive field of runners from NCAA Division I, II and III schools at the UC Riverside Invitational on Saturday.

"We had a positive first invitational meet of the season," Oxy head coach Rob Bartlett said. "The team got a chance to race in a highly competitive environment and learn some valuable lessons that will help us grow as we move forwards."

The Oxy women took seventh of 19 teams in the open section of the competition.

Roxanne Valle was the Tigers' best, finishing the 5K in 18:35.6 for 29th overall. Aria Blumm was second at 18:46.4 for 37th place and Cora Davies was third and 63rd at 19:18.9.

"On the women's side I was impressed with how the team was able to move up in the later stages," Barlett said. "In particular, Kayla Lim, Fiona Pedrick, Gabi Wayne and Lilah Abrams all looked very strong in the last mile of their races."

The Oxy men placed fourth overall in the open section of the competition in a field of 16 teams.

Brody Barkan finished first for the Oxy men and 19th overall, completing the 8K in 25:48.9. Tim McClure was second and 20th at 25:51.6, Tristan Santos was third and 22nd at 25:54.9, Charles Sheh was fourth and 25th at 26:06.4 and Thomas Robertson was fifth and 26th at 26:07.9.

"On the men's side, the team did a great job of working together as a pack as evidenced by our 19-second, 1-5 spread."

The Tigers are back in action at the TMU Invite on Sept. 29.
