LOS ANGELES — Bailey Stevens showed off her power on opening day for the Occidental softball team, homering twice in a doubleheader against Pacific Lutheran.
The Tigers fell 9-0 in Game 1 and had a 3-1 lead in Game 2 before losing a close one, 4-3.
Stevens, a senior first baseman and catcher from Elk Grove, is up to 17 home runs for her career. She had six as a first year, five as a sophomore and four as a junior last season.
Kennedy Robillard went all five innings for the win, giving up just three hits, no walks and had a pair of strikeouts for Pacific Lutheran.
Game 2 was much more competitive with each team one-upping the other on a couple occasions. Oxy took a 2-0 lead on Stevens' first homer, bringing in her and Madison Romero, who went 1 for 3. The Tigers extended their lead to 3-0 when Stevens hit a solo shot in the fifth, but Pacific Lutheran countered with a three-run homer of its own by Samantha Simundson in the sixth.
Kathryn Hatlen scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh on an error by the Tigers.
Roberts went 2 for 3 for Oxy in Game 2 and Alexis Funaki was 1 for 3.
Delaney Russell, a first year pitcher from Lakewood, made her first career start for Oxy, going all seven innings with just three earned runs charged against her.
Season Impact: The Tigers open the season 0-2.
