Tigers Take Down Leopards in Game 1


LOS ANGELES — The Occidental softball team jumped on La Verne in the first two innings and rode the momentum to a 6-2 victory in Game 1 of a doubleheader with the Leopards on Sunday.

Oxy scored four runs in bottom of the first inning on an RBI-single by Bailey Stevens, a two-run double by Cassie Carter and an RBI-single by Drew Samson.

In the second inning, the Tigers put two more on the board when Alexandra Olkein singled in Nyla Gatison, and Cora Roberts singled in Olkein.

Olkein, a first year from Cupertino who came into the game hitting .395, continued her hot weekend at the plate, going 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI. Through three games this weekend, she is 8 for 11 with four runs and four RBIs. She has a six-game hitting streak and has gotten at least one hit in eight of her last nine games.

Delaney Russell was outstanding in the circle for the Tigers, pitching all seven innings for the win, with just one earned run, five hits and two walks.

Jiana Rojo went six innings for La Verne and was charged with the loss.

Season Impact: Oxy improves to 2-16 on the season and 2-7.

La Verne falls to 8-9 and 4-5

Next Game: The Tigers are back in action for the second game of their doubleheader at 2:30 p.m.
