LOS ANGELES — Cora Roberts continued to tear the cover off the ball, Bailey Stevens added to her Oxy career home run record and Delaney Russell was solid in the circle as the Tigers split a non-conference doubleheader against Willamette at Bell Field on Sunday.
Roberts, who played shortstop in Game 1 and catcher in Game 2, went 3-8 with a home run, two RBIs and a run scored on the day. She extended her hitting streak to eight games and hit her second homer of the weekend in Game 1. She had a Grand slam against Cal Lutheran on Saturday.
"Cora's bat was on fire this weekend,"Oxy head coach Ali Haehnel said. "Our outfield was sharp and got us some big outs, Delaney pitched her heart out and Bailey added to her home run record."
Stevens upped her season total to five long balls and her career total to 20 with a three-run shot in the first inning of Game 2.
Stevens is hitting a team-best .452 with a .528 on base percentage and a .742 slugging percentage.
The Tigers went up 5-0 after two innings in Game 1 and were able to hold on for the 6-4 win.
Oxy's luck wasn't so go good in Game 2, as Willamette broke a 4-4 tie with four runs in the sixth to pull out the victory.
Delaney Russell went all seven innings for the win in Game 1. She pitched the final five innings in Game 2 after Madison Romero took the game through the first two innings.
Nyla Gatison had a big day for Oxy, going 5 for 7 with three runs and two stolen bases.
Madison Romero went 3 for 4 with a double and a run, Drew Samson was 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI, Kira Elliott was 2 for 2 with an RBI, Alexandra Olkein was 2 for 4 with a run and Stevens was 3 for 3 in Game 2.
Season Impact: Oxy's record goes to 4-19 on the season. Oxy has won three of its last six games, bouncing back nicely after senior standout Alexis Funaki suffered a season-ending injury.
Willamette falls to 3-18.
Next Game: The Tigers are back in action at Whittier on March 29.
