WHITTIER — Shariah Green and the Occidental women's basketball team won its fourth game in a row with a 66-61 victory at Whittier on Wednesday.
Season Impact: The Tigers improve to 8-6 overall and 4-1 in SCIAC play. Oxy is off to its best start in SCIAC play since the 2012-13 season. The team finished 11-5 that year and made the SCIAC Postseason Tournament.
Whittier falls to 3-11 and 2-3.
Green, a 6-foot-2 first-year forward from Hillsboro, Ore., went 5 for 6 from the field with seven rebounds, in 37 minutes played. Tala Ismail, a fellow first year from Pasadena, was outstanding as well, scoring 12 points with nine rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Erin Matsumoto, Oxy's senior leader and leading scorer, added 12 points and six rebounds.
Whittier's best effort came from Cali Cubel, who scored a game-high 16 points.
The Tigers went on a 10-2 run that began at the end of the third quarter and lasted nearly 5 minutes of the fourth, putting them up 55-47. Whittier was only able to cut the deficit to three points on two brief occasions for the rest of the game.
