LOS ANGELES — The Occidental women's basketball team came up a little short in a close game with Pacific (Ore.), falling 59-50 at Rush Gym on Thursday night.
Alyssa Ramlochan led the Tigers with 12 points and nine rebounds, and Taylor Yoshida had a team-high 13 points, along with six rebounds, four assists and three steals for Oxy. Emily Leonard added six points and seven rebounds in her first game back after soccer season, and Madison Toy and Kulaea Tulua each added six points.
The Tigers had a 38-35 lead at the end of the third quarter, but the Boxers made a few more plays down the stretch in the fourth, winning the quarter 24-12.
Liana Tanaka was good for the Boxers driving to the rim and creating offense, finishing with a game-high 18 points. Ashley Jones added 17 points on 6 for 12 from the field and 3 for 7 from the 3-point line, including a dagger 3-pointer from 24-feet with the shot clock winding down, that put the Boxers up 50-45 points with 3 minutes to play.
After Jones hit the three, the Boxers' got a loose ball and came up with a layup to go up seven points on their next possession.
Courtney Carolan added a 3-pointer for Pacific (Ore.) to put the game out of reach as Oxy tried to cut into the deficit.
The Tigers came out of the gate playing tough defense, allowing just five Boxer points in the first quarter.
Oxy kept the Boxers scoreless for nearly 6 minutes, lasting midway through the first quarter into the second quarter.
Shortly after the dry spell the Boxers rallied for eight straight points to go up 13-12.
Oxy went into the locker room down 24-20 and then played its best basketball of the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Boxers 18-11.
Next Game: Oxy is back in action against Colorado College at Whittier on Friday at 7 p.m.
