CARSON — The Occidental women's and men's golf teams both took down scholarship school Marymount University Sunday at the Victoria Links Golf Club in their fall season opener.

Women's Recap

Nicole Henderson had her college best 6-over 78 and first year Anna Lundquist also shot a 78, leading the revamped Tigers to a nine-shot victory over the Mariners. Oxy won by a score of 322-331.

Katy Uchiyama was Oxy's third best at 81, and Anna Amos and Isabel Ruiz each shot an 85 in the score-four event.

The women's team boasts a full roster, many of them talented young players, that could be the deepest recruiting class in Oxy women's golf history.

"I'm so happy that the hard word is paying off and the team seems to be jelling," Oxy coach Will Morris said. "However, there's so much room for improvement. The future is very bright."

The women return to the course Monday at the California State Intercollegiate in Ventura.

Men's Recap

Dylan Jirsa and Sam Miller picked up right where they left off, posting rounds of 4-under par 68 on the tough 7,100-yard Victoria Links Golf Club course on Sunday.

Jirsa, who was named the SCIAC Men's Golfer of the Year in 2017, played an outstanding round with seven birdies.

Miller, who shot the lowest round in the SCIAC Championships in 2017, started the 2017-18 season in championship fashion.

"Sam and Dylan are pushing each other, which is wonderful for the improvement of our program," Morris said. "They continue to raise the bar for themselves and their teammates."

The men's returns to the course on Monday at the California State Intercollegiate in Ventura.
