CLAREMONT — A successful Occidental women's lacrosse season came to an end on Wednesday night in the SCIAC semifinal against a good Pomona-Pitzer team.
The Tigers spotted the Sagehens a quick 7-0 lead before playing much better throughout the rest of the game, but the hole was too big to climb completely out of as Oxy eventually fell 17-12 on the road.
"We're disappointed that we didn't come out and play our best at the beginning, but overall it was a very good season and our team has lots to be proud of," said Oxy head coach Hannah Khin, whose coaching staff was named SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year on Tuesday. "We had terrific senior leadership all season by Neah Bois, Madisyn Hallare, Shai Goodman and Nicole Litt."
Oxy defender Emma Barrow had four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
Kierra Havill led Pomona-Pitzer and the game with four goals, and Sarah Woo and Lilly Thomey each added three.
Just about everything that could go wrong did for Oxy for about the first 9 minutes of the game. Pelliccia finally broke the Sagehens' run with Oxy's first score around the 21-minute mark.
By halftime Oxy was outplaying Pomona-Pitzer and cut the lead to 11-8.
In the second half, neither team was able to find the net for nearly 8 minutes as the defense tightened up. The Sagehens were the first to score and then the Tigers made their best push of the game, cutting it to 12-10 on goals by Calloway-Jones and Di Lella with 20:56 to play.
Pomona-Pitzer answered and put the game away with the next four goals.
The Tigers finish their season at 9-6 overall.Follow Oxy Athletics on Twitter Sign Up for Newsletters Watch on Youtube Follow us on Instagram
