REDLANDS — Elleni Bekele headed in a corner kick from Robin Waymouth in the 5th minute and the Occidental women's soccer team controlled its game at Redlands for the bulk of the 90 minutes on Wednesday.
But the Bulldogs countered with a pair of second-half goals on their home field to edge the Tigers 2-1.
Rachel Tungoli finished off a junk ball in the box to tie the score in the 66th minute and then Adi Fellows volleyed in a cross from Tungoli for the game-deciding goal in the 78th minute.
Meredith Cook had an early opportunity to put Oxy up 2-0 in the first half on a 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper, but lost it with a little indecision.
It's a disappointing loss for the Tigers given how well they played in the first 45 minutes.
"We had a good first half with much improved possession and composure followed by a not so strong second-half," Oxy head coach Colm McFeely said. "We had poor defending on the goals and ended with a loss when a win was very much there to be had."
The Tigers fall to 2-2-1 overall and 0-2-1 in SCIAC play.
