LOS ANGELES — Anaise Nugent scored her team-best sixth goal of the season as the Occidental women's soccer team picked up an important 1-0 win against Whittier at Jack Kemp Stadium on Wednesday night.
Season Impact: Oxy improves to 8-3-1 overall and 4-3-1 in SCIAC play. The Tigers are sitting in fifth with 13 points, just one point back of fourth place for the final SCIAC playoff spot, pending other Wednesday night results, with four regular season conference games to play.
Whittier falls to 2-5-5 and 2-3-3.
After a scoreless first half, Nugent found the net on an assist from Chiara Serafini in the 54th minute.
Both first years have had outstanding seasons offensively for the Tigers. Nugent is currently ranked third among SCIAC players in goals and Serafini is among the top 15 SCIAC players with eight points.
The Tigers dominated the game and its opportunities with 21 shots to Whittier's three, including 12 of them on goal. Oxy also had eight corner kicks and didn't allow Whittier any corner kicks.
Oxy's defense also got back on track with its first shutout in its last five games. The Tigers had allowed just two goals in their first seven games of the season.
The Tigers are in good position to defend their SCIAC Tournament Championship from last season.
