Defending Champs Headed Back to SCIAC Playoffs

LOS ANGELES — The Occidental women's soccer team is headed to the playoffs.

The Tigers dominated La Verne in a 4-0 win at Jack Kemp Stadium on Saturday night, punching their ticket to the four-team SCIAC Tournament that determines the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs.

"It was great to see our four seniors play significant roles in making it into the playoffs," Oxy head coach Colm McFeely said. "We started strong with a good tempo, good movement and the kind of desire needed to make an impact at this crucial stage of the season."

Oxy won the tournament last season for the first time in program history.

Meredith Cook made sure there was no doubt Oxy would be on its way with a pair of goals in the first half that quickly put Oxy in the driver's seat. Karla Alas-Lopez and Katie Wood scored goals in the second half.

Both Julia Lindemuth and Isabella Bonomi recorded assists.

Oxy has won five games in a row.

The Tigers will finish the season against Cal Lutheran on Monday at 4 p.m. The game was postponed due to fires in the Thousand Oaks area last Wednesday.

If Oxy wins, it will be the No. 2 seed in the tournament and host a home playoff game on Thursday, Nov. 7.

"Now it's about quick recovery for Monday's game and a shot at a home semifinal," McFeely said.

The Tigers improve to 11-3-1 overall and 7-3-1 in SCIAC play.
