Divers, Moen Highlight Opening Swim Weekend

LOS ANGELES — Led by a pair of standout performances on the 1-meter diving board, the Occidental women's swimming and diving team opened the season at the Malibu Invite hosted by NCAA Division I Pepperdine at the Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool.

The Tigers competed in distance and diving events on Friday, and middle distance and sprinting events on Saturday.

First year Sarajoy Salib finished second overall in the 1-meter competition with a score of 132.45 and first year Hannah Chazdon placed third at 123.30.

The Tigers swept the podium in the 400-yard IM. Sophomore Annika Moen took first at 4:52.98, first year Madison Thurber was second at 4:58.56 and first year Aime Fukada was third at 5:07.85.

Moen, a championship finalist in all of her events at the conference level last season, took first in the 50 breast with a 33.15, second place in the 100 fly at 1:02.02, won the 100 breast with a 1:11.41 and won the 200 breast at 2:32.56 with teammate Daryl Lewis finishing right behind her in second.

Thurber was also impressive in the 100 back and 200 back. She was second in the 200 back at 2:14.08, closing in on the school record of 2:10.57 held by former All-American Caroline Chang. Her 100 back was good enough for second place at 1:02.06.

Joan Kronick went 1:02.78 in the 100 butterfly for a fifth-place finish and was second in the 50 freestyle with a 25.82.

"It's always fun to see them compete for the first time of the year," Oxy head coach Steve Webb said. "And with a large number of first years, it was fun seeing them competete in their first collegiate meet."

Next Meet: Oxy opens its home schedule against Pomona-Pitzer at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 11 at Taylor Pool.
