Oxy Women Win Two-Day Caltech Invite

PASADENA — Caltech hosted a great conference competition this weekend with Redlands and Cal Lutheran. The Tigers swam a slightly shortened version of the SCIAC Championship meet over two days. Oxy's women won the meet with a total of 937 points and the men were third with 628.5 points.

The Oxy men had a great weekend, racing to season-best times in every event. First year Sam Walker was the breakout star of the meet with a third-place finish in the 1650 free and two top eight finishes in the 500 free and 400 IM. Junior Zeke Sebastian continued to have an outstanding season finishing in the top four in all of his individual events and relay events.

Dion Holden won the 1-meter diving competition for the Tigers and later earned SCIAC Diver of the Week honors for his efforts.

"The men showed a lot of passion in their racing this weekend," Oxy head coach Haley Mitchell said. "We've made huge improvements since the start of the season and I can't wait to see what we can accomplish second semester."

The women fought for a win in a close competition against Redlands. The Tigers led by just three points after day one of the competition and ended up winning the meet by 30 points (Oxy 937 - Redlands 907).

"I'm really excited about the grit that our women showed throughout the weekend.  We had a few injuries and illnesses that could have thrown us but we stayed in the moment and raced really well."

We had multiple events winners on the women's team.  Cindy Dong (100 fly, 200 free), Annika Moen (200 IM), Emily Driscoll (100 Back), Maddie Dieffenbach (200 Breast) and Chanel Ng (100 Free) all won individual events.  The Tigers also won the women's 200 Medley Relay, as well as the 200 and 400 Free Relay.

Oxy is back in action with a home meet against Pomona-Pitzer at 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 11.
