SCIAC TRACK: CMS Women, La Verne Men Lead After Day 1

LOS ANGELES — Day 1 of the 2014 SCIAC Track and Field Championships is in the books, with 10 SCIAC Champions crowned and one thrilling finish in the long jump highlighting Friday's events at the 99th annual meet hosted by Occidental College at Bill Henry Track.

At his home venue, Occidental senior Kevin Cox led the long jump finals through five rounds with a personal-best leap of 23-feet, 8.75 inches.

But on his sixth-and-final attempt, Redlands' Darron Usher jumped 24-0.75, tying the best mark in NCAA Division III so far this year while earning the most exciting individual title of the day.

"My coach gave me a pointer at the end. He said, 'aim your feet at the end of the pit' and I that's all I focused on," Usher said. "It was a great feeling. That's the farthest I've jumped in my eight years of track and field."

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps swept the podium in the only two running events that went final.

Allison Barnwell, Kaitlyn Spees and Caroline Willian took all three spots, scoring 24 to help the Athenas take a 64-45.50 lead over second-place Cal Lutheran on Day 1.

On the men's side, Evan Molineux, Alex Lombardo and Bob Owlett took the top spots for the Stags, scoring more than half of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' second-best team total of 39.

La Verne leads the men's competition with 44 points behind Matt Rehder's championship in the javelin and Jason Nichols win in the pole vault.

Saturday's field events begin at 1 p.m. with the men's hammer and the women's javelin.

Live Stream coverage of Day 2 will begin with running events at 5 p.m.
