LOS ANGELES — Melissa Braun took second in the pole vault, Aria Blum finished second in the 3,000m steeplechase and Mel Devoney ran a huge personal best in the 10,000m, leading the Occidental women's track and field team on Day 1 of the SCIAC Championships on Friday.
Braun, a first year from Santa Cruz, cleared 11 feet, 6.5 inches, but couldn't get over 11-10.5, falling to Redlands' Amanda Widen.
Devoney finished her 10k in 37 minutes, 47.54 seconds for a second-place finish. Natalie Gradwohl also scored in the event for Oxy, taking seventh (41:11.81).
Blum finished the 3,000m steeplechase in 11:26.17. Her partner in crime Eva Townsend finished two places behind her in fourth (11:37.78).
Oxy standout thrower Sabrina Degnan finished third in the javelin (124-10) and scored with a seventh-place finish in the shot put (35-01).
All running events on Day 1 with the exception of the 3,000m steeplechase and the 10,000m, were prelims for Saturday's session. Events on the track begin at 5 p.m. on Saturday with the 4 x 100m relays.
In the women's competition, the shot put, javelin, long jump and pole vault were all finals.

SCIAC Scoring: The dual-meet season makes up 25 percent of the final standging with the remaining 75 percent determined at the SCIAC Championship.
Event Scoring: The meet will be scored 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 for all events. Eight athletes advance to the finals in all track events except the 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m relays.
