NEW ORLEANS — Four Occidental track and field athletes earned USTFCCCA Indoor All-West Region honors on Monday after outstanding performances at the NAU Tune Up in Flagstaff, Ariz. earlier this season.
"We're excited that Sabrina, LaShauna, Jada, and Tyler have been recognized for their efforts at NAU last month," Oxy head coach Rob Barteltt said. "The NAU Tune Up meet was their first ever indoor collegiate meet and the fact that they produced marks that earned them All-Region honors speaks highly of their competitive abilities. We can't wait to see what the outdoor season has in store for them all."
Degnan, a senior thrower from Atascadero, had a best of 49-04.5 for second all-time in SCIAC history in the weight throw, adding to her list of accolades in her storied career. She's also a multiple time SCIAC Champion, school record holder in the javelin and two-time national qualifier.
Jada Newkirk, a sophomore form San Mateo, and Porter, a junior form Minneapolis, both earned the honor in the 60m dash. Porter led the way with a time of 7.81, which is third all-time in SCIAC, and Newkirk followed closely behind in 7.82, which ranks fourth in SCIAC history. Both women are a key part of Oxy's talented women's sprint crew and have already made headlines with All-American honors in sprinting events during their rookies seasons.
Webb, a junior from Santa Monica, crushed the 60m with a time of 6.96, which ranks fifth in SCIAC history. Webb is also the current SCIAC leader in the 100m with a time of 10.7
