GENEVA, Ohio — LaShauna Porter earned her second All-American honor with another personal record at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Outdoor National Championships on Saturday.
The junior from Minneapolis, Minn., ran 11.94 in the final of the 100m, earning seventh place overall in the event. She ran 11.96 the day before, dropping even more time.
Porter, the defending SCIAC Champion in the 100m and 200m, was a 200m All-American last season.
Brody Barkan, a senior captain on the men's team, also finished his Oxy career with a solid performance, finishing 11th overall in the 1,500m final with a time of 4:01.64.
Melissa Braun competed in the women's pole vault on the first day of the competition on Thursday, clearing 12 feet, 5.5 inches for a personal record and ninth place overall.
All three Oxy athletes competing at the championships finished better than their seed times or marks.
Porter Headed to 100m Final at NCAAs
GENEVA, Ohio — LaShauna Porter is on her way to the 100m final.
The junior ran a personal-record 11.96 seconds in the fastest of three qualifying heats on Friday to snatch up the eighth spot in Saturday's final at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Outdoor National Championships.
It was a sigh of relief for Porter after being disqualified in the 200m prelims on Thursday.
"She is so resilient and tough," Oxy head coach Rob Bartlett said. "It was a super impressive performance."
Porter will have a chance to earn another All-American honor by finishing in the top eight.
Melissa Braun competed in the women's pole vault, finishing ninth overall with a personal best of 12 feet, 5.5 inches, and Brody Barkan qualified for the men's 1,500m final on Day 1 of the three-day championship event.
Barkan runs at 9:35 a.m pacific time on Saturday and Porter will run at 10:30 a.m. pacific.
Braun PRs on Day 1 at NCAA Championships
GENEVA, Ohio — Melissa Braun cleared a personal-best 12 feet, 5.5 inches in the pole vault on Oxy's first day of competition at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Outdoor National Championships on Thursday.
The senior finished ninth overall in the event, missing the coveted All-American top eight by just one spot.
Brody Barkan, Oxy's senior middle distance star, qualified for the 1,500m final with a solid race.
"The Tigers started with a great first day," Oxy head coach Rob Bartlett said. "We're excited to keep the good momentum up as we head into Day 2 tomorrow."
LaShauna Porter did not qualify for the final in the 200m, but still has the 100m to run on Friday at 12:30 p.m. pacific time.
Barkan will run the 1,500m final at 9:35 a.m pacific time on Saturday.
Barkan, Porter and Braun Headed to Nationals
GENEVA, Ohio — The Occidental men's and women's track and field programs will have three athletes participating in the NCAA Division III Track and Field Outdoor National Championships this weekend.
Oxy men's senior Brody Barkan ran a personal record in the 1,500m at the Oxy Invite, going 3:52.10 and punching his ticket to the competition in Geneva, Ohio that begins on Thursday and concludes on Saturday. Oxy women's senior Melissa Braun earned a bid in the pole vault and women's junior LaShauna Porter is going in the 100m and 200m after winning the SCIAC Championship in both events.
"We're incredibly excited that Melissa, LaShauna, and Brody have all qualified for the NCAA DIII National Championships," Oxy head coach Rob Bartlett said. "This will be Melissa and LaShauna's second consecutive trip to the big show, and we're hoping that they're both able to use their experience to build on their successes from 2018. This will be Brody's first trip to track and field nationals, and a tremendous reward for four years of hard work."
Barkan, Porter and Braun were also included in the USTFCCCA's All-West Region selections announced over the weekend, along with several of their teammates.
The Top-5 individuals in each event from each region earned All-Region honors, in addition to each of the members of a top-3 ranked relay teams.
