LA VERNE –Logan Boyer-Hayse (Boulder, Colo.) registered 11 kills and nine digs, but the Occidental College volleyball team was overwhelmed by La Verne and lost in straight sets on Saturday, 25-14, 25-17, 25-17.

A Boyer-Hayse kill and a Sarah Beene (Gilbert, Ariz.) service ace gave Oxy (13-5, 6-4 SCIAC) a 3-0 lead in the first set, but La Verne immediately responded with a 14-2 run to effectively put the set out reach and claimed the set.

In the second set it was a similar story as the Leopards (16-2, 9-1 SCIAC) used an early 6-0 run to take the second set and in the third, the Tigers could not gain any momentum and trailed wire-to-wire.

La Verne hit .432 as a team.

Jacqueline Surdell

Sophomore Jacqueline Surdell (Chicago) had perhaps her best game of the season even though the stat sheet might not show it.

"The one person who stepped up was Surdell," Occidental head coach Heather Collins said. "She was in the right spot, hit smart, and was aggressive on defense."

Surdell finished with a kill, an assist, and four digs.

Stephanie Gann (Tacoma, Wash.) added seven kills for the Tigers and Jessie Altman (La Jolla) had 24 assists.

With the loss, Oxy remains in fourth place in SCIAC standings and three games back of the first-place La Verne, but is still within striking distance with six conference matches left to play.

The Tigers return to action on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. when they host Whittier College.
