Michels Leads Tigers to Second Win in Chicago

ELMHURST, Ill. — It took two tries down the stretch, but Dana Michels and the Occidental College women's volleyball team picked up another impressive victory during their four-match Chicago road trip, beating Coe College 25-19, 22-25, 25-13, 27-25 at the Elmhurst Invitational on Saturday.

With the match point on the line, Michels approached from the outside and crushed a shot towards the back-right corner of the court. It was deflected out of bounds and as a Coe player desperately tried to recover it out, she collided with a fan.

Jump ball.

The Tigers (2-1), who had already begun to celebrate, had to replay the point.

Oxy went right back to Michels and this time she didn't leave anything to chance, burying her 11th kill of the match.

"I love how this team just keeps battling no matter what," Oxy head coach Heather Collins said. "We have been faced with some adversity and have found a way to make up for it by playing with heart. We thought we'd won the game, but the referees called a replay and we remained poised and confident to win that point a second time."

It is the second quality opponent that the Tigers have beaten in as many days. On Friday, Oxy beat St. Norbert, which was 24-9 last season, in four sets. Coe has been very good recently as well, winning 15 straight matches before losing in their conference tournament in 2012.

Stephanie Gann had 11 kills, Madyson Cassidy had 20 digs and Jessie Altman dished out 36 assists for the Tigers.

Oxy jumped out to an early lead in Game 1 and then Michels put down three kills out of Oxy's last four points, to close the set.

In Game 2, freshmen Monique Gibbs and Natalie Dwulet sparked a run with three kills between them. Cassidy followed it with a diving dig and an ace, and the Tigers looked comfortable with a 23-18 lead. But Coe countered with a 7-2 run to even the match, 1-1.

Oxy's serving and defense at the net was the difference in Game 3. Hana Hunt scored back-to-back aces, Kandace Korver followed her with two more and Gann added a fifth, helping Oxy jump out to a 10-4 lead. Dwulet added two blocks and two kills and the Tigers cruised to an easy win.

The Tigers finish the Elmhurst Invitational against Buena Vista at 1 p.m.
