Oxy Volleyball Sweeps Manchester

LOS ANGELESSabrina Degnan, Taylor Gorretta and the Occidental women's volleyball team swept Manchester 3-0 in a non-conference match at Rush Gym on Friday.

Oxy wins its third match in a row.

Degnan had a match-high 10 kills, Gorretta added eight kills, Hannah Wagner had six kills and three aces, and Allie Sundara had 16 assists, three aces and seven digs. 

Oxy had a total of eight blocks at the net led by Jacqueline Rutherfurd who was involved in five of them. 

Hannah Tevis and Haley Duncan led Manchester with seven kills each. 

Game 1: Occidental 25, Manchester 19

Oxy went on a 6-1 run and had a pair of aces from Hannah Wagner during the middle of the set to take full control of Game 1.

Degnan had four kils on .400 hitting and Theresa Nevin added three in the set.

Haley Duncan had four kills on .667 for Manchester.

Game 2: Occidental 25, Manchester 9

Oxy jumped out to leads of 5-0 and 12-3, riding the momentum of its win in Game 1.

Degnan and Taylor Gorretta each had three kills in the set.

Game 3: Occidental 25, Manchester 18

With the score tied 7-7, Oxy went on a 7-2 run to jump out in front and stayed in front. 

About Manchester: Manchester is a Division III private liberal arts college with 1,400 students in North Manchester, Indiana that competes in the Heartland Conference. 

The Spartans will stay in town to play Redlands and Mills at Redlands on Sunday, and at Vanguard on Monday.

Season Impact: Oxy improves to 6-9 overall on the season.

Manchester falls to 4-11 overall.

Next Match: The Tigers are back in action on Tuesday at St. Katherine at 11 a.m.

Oxy returns to SCIAC play at Whittier on Oct. 12 at 7 p.m.
