Oxy Faces Providence, Westcliff in Home Opener

LOS ANGELES — The Occidental women's volleyball team opened its home schedule with a pair of matches against Providence Christian and Westcliff at Rush Gym on Saturday.

Match 1: Providence Christian 3, Occidental 1

Madelene Sellergren led the way for Oxy with 16 kills and Taylor Gorretta added 10, but the Tigers only managed to win the third set.

Lara Minassians had 38 assists for Oxy and Kennedy Dirkes had 15 digs and two service aces.

Sets No. 2 and No. 4 needed extra points.

Providence Christian played good defense, keeping solid Oxy attacks from scoring.

Alyssa Roberts led Providence Christian with 17 kills and Raquel Valdovinos added 15.

Match 2: Westcliff 3 Occidental 1

Oxy served well in the first game led by Minassians who helped the Tigers jump out to a 9-1 lead. Oxy cruised from there, riding Sellergren and Gorretta on offense. 

After the victory in Game 1, Oxy didn't play as well, falling in three straight.

Gorretta led Oxy with 14 kills, Sellergren had 11 and Lauren Duffy added seven.

Minassians had 36 assists and an impressive seven aces.

Amanda Gross and Sarah Road led the Warriors with 10 kills each.

Season Impact: Oxy falls to 2-8 on the season.

Next Match: Oxy is back in action agasinst UC Santa Cruz on Sunday at noon. The Tigers open SCIAC play against La Verne on Friday at 7 p.m. at Rush Gym.
