Oxy Women 3rd, Men 4th at West Regionals

CLAREMONT — The Occidental men's and women's cross country teams had their best day of the season when it counted the most.

The Occidental women placed third and the men placed fourth at the NCAA Division III West Regionals at Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday.

Each team had all five scorers finish in the top 35, earning All-Region honors.

Matt Scarlett, Tim McClure, Thomas Robertson, Conor Brennan and Charles Sheh earned the honor for the men.

Sabrina Thurber, Kayla Lim, Lilah Abrams, Lydia Montgomery and Lucinda Kolpa did the same for the women.

Thurber and Lim both qualified for the NCAA Division III National Championships next Saturday in Louisville, Kentucky. Thurber placed placed seventh overall and Lim was 11th, guaranteeing them a spot in the competition for being one of the top seven individuals not on a qualifying team.

Both the men's and women's teams, along with Matt Scarlett, who placed 20th in the men's race, will find out tomorrow at noon if they will also be headed to nationals.

It's also the best finish for the Oxy women in Rob Bartlett's tenure and the best since the 1990s.

"I'm just really proud of their effort," Bartlett said. "They fought really hard and raced their best when it mattered the most. They couldn't have fought harder."
